Is Yoga a Sin in Christianity?

Reading Time: 5 minutes

So, is yoga a sin? Is it not? Christianity and yoga – are they compatible? The answer to those questions depends on your belief system and whether you believe in God. Also, what is a sin to you? Is doing yoga a sin and why?

In the article below, we will further explore the question of is doing yoga a sin and what some people believe yoga is.

Stay tuned, and we hope that this article helps you out.

Is yoga a sin? How does it stand against religion?

Some people believe anything that takes their attention away from God for a long time is a sin. Such things are TV shows, video games, eating an entire chocolate cake, and even activities like yoga. Which can lead those people to the question – is doing yoga a sin in Christianity?

However, some people approach yoga as an activity to reach their higher powers, so it’s not a sin for them.

As you can tell, there is no correct answer as long as what you believe in your heart coordinates with you. If you start doing yoga and it goes against your beliefs, it’s probably not for you. But if doing the asanas makes you feel closer to God, then yoga could be your new hobby.

You might hear from some people that yoga is a religion. In a nutshell, it is not a religion, even though some aspects could be considered religious. Yoga has been used since ancient times to connect humans to divine power, and many practice it to reach a high spiritual state.

Yoga is a way of life with its practices, traditional food, and strong beliefs. It keeps the mind and body together and lets you be healthy and spiritual.

It’s a beautiful way to be fit and connect with your inner self as opposed to the stressed lives we are all living.

Do Yogis Believe in God?

The correct answer to the question of if yogis believe in God is no. People who practice yoga usually believe in a higher being than themselves but not a specific entity. Yoga lets you connect with yourself, the universe, and others. Some people see God as something that’s too limited to only believe in.

They have the power to see everything good and divine around them in everyday life.

They believe in a universal energy and a type of consciousness that surrounds everything and everyone. It’s called either Atman, Brahman, or simply the Divine. This is as close as yogis get to God.

Christians and Yoga

You might ask yourself if yoga and sin, and we suggest turning to catholicism and Christianity for the answer.

Well, for Christians doing yoga is a sin and not so much. The thing that can make yoga a sin is the Hindu philosophy which is at the core of each yoga class. It brings all the asanas and breathing techniques that unite one’s consciousness with the universe. The Hindu philosophy calls it “merging with God.”

We recommend that even if yoga goes against your belief system, you can still do the physical workout for balance and flexibility. Avoid any breathing techniques or poses that might be spiritually connected. Many Christians attend yoga classes in their local fitness center instead of doing it through a Hindu temple or ashram.

If you don’t like the idea of yoga being a group activity, then go online and try classes in your own time and place. They teach the basic poses without getting too spiritual or referring to Hinduism in any way.

Catholics and Yoga

On another side of the coin to the question of whether is yoga a sin is Catholics. The answer is both yes and no. It depends on how you approach yoga practices and ask yourself how is yoga a sin to you personally. Again, if you are doing it as an exercise, there is nothing wrong with that. But if you use it to achieve enlightenment and come close to God, it might clash with your Catholic belief system.

If you ask Pope Francis why is yoga a sin, he will tell you that it leads people away from God. He even said, “It is not necessary to seek God in the clouds when he can be found close by in your neighbor? And your neighbor is not an abstraction.”

Pope Francis even warned his fellow Catholics against straying from Jesus through New Age spiritual practices like yoga. He also referred to such practices as having a close relationship with Jesus without going through his church.

So, it’s extremely important to know what yoga you are practicing and if it’s compatible with your religion.

As you can see, there are many belief systems and religions in the world, so it’s up to you how you construct your own. Yoga can feel like sinning or being closer to God, so there is no right or wrong answer. If it feels off, don’t do it. Ask your heart whether it is a sin to do yoga. Ask yourself the question – does yoga go against Christianity? Find the answer within yourself.

Is yoga a sin – yes or no? Maybe it depends on how do you understand the idea of the sin. The yoga and Christianity conflict will probably continue, but we are not entirely sure why.
